North Wales Community Web 2.0

During my five years in Llithfaen I was given some server space to develop the community web in North Wales which I created using joomla. On this site I promoted some experiments in broadcasting live interactive video, which was part of my connection with the ‘creative technologist’ network that was being incubated.

OpenKites Prototype 2013 revisited in blackheath kite meetup 2015

January team flying on the south coast with L-katz

It’s a three hour journey from south-London to Stokes bay and it felt frosty early that morning, so in the early hours I imagined flying while trying my best to ignore my numb hands. Winters were harsh when practising on the Llyn Peninsular, I lived at a high altitide so in the winter the Welsh gales prevented me from flying much at my 900ft roost between October and March. The expense of shattered frames and the gracelessness of strong wind nudged me to concentrate on music practise during the winter season instead.

I let the smartphone calculate my best route, which took me onto the Gosport ferry from the mainland to the mainland for want of a better description, a beauty of a pleasure ride, although only an eight minute cruise. It was a bright sunny day (also pretty warm) and although I missed my Sunday bus connection on the other side another friendly bus driver dropped me off a short walk from the bay. After recharging at the cafe I scanned the entire bay for kites and saw nothing but yaughts, then turned back towards the cafe and shortly spotted L-katz (Lex, Irma, Rog, Neil, and soon me on kite three of five) flying with DreamOn kites.

I had met pairs team Flying Fish at some London kite festivals as well as Brighton and Lex helped me out find an opportunity in the weather worth my travelling time, and suggested the Skydog DreamOn as an affordable tool to introduce people to team flying. It was a wonderful winter sunny day with winds around 8mph. There were small wind dropouts but nothing to prevent over three hours of team flying and learning.

Useful practises which helped me keep up with learning new information on the day with the team were the STACK guide to team communication and the team figures which I have been accessing through roy reed’s animation series as well as through the rule book updates. It has been a while since my first experiences with team flying at Leominster kite festival and I kept up and gained some happy hours on the circuit. It was a really comfortable and friendly experience with L-katz. More to come hopefully!

Figures that we practised:
Cascade
Horizontal thread with stall and ‘under’ to turn down to the horizontal.
Boxes in diamond, parallel, 5-dice with square to right and square to left, also jumps and starbursts.

[TtF]FOLDING SKIES-FOLDING BOUNDARIES-FOLDING LIMITS

Welcome back to oldstyle sonicport.net here

-A website about kites and musical instruments, micro-enterprise, machine assisted learning, and open source things.

What might be of interest to me here?

I am interested in the importance of co-design for community building within the arts and health category and have a history of working towards the development of a therapeutic practice that will embrace complexities to develop a neural-plasticity required to recover from some of the damage caused by the over-simplification of ‘what is wellbeing?’.

I have followed a course of culture beginning as a young musician and witnessed the adoptation of creative technology as I moved through my working life. I have been critical of early adoption of too simple web interfaces and have been mostly excited about the unexplored futures of broadcasting, art performance and assitive learning as well as exploring outdoor environments.

I am interested in design that assists, but also does not imply a new dependency. I prefer to learn from something and move on, but this does not mean buying some new hardware only to be used once. This is about sharing in the spirit of open source, reusable things that can be customized to scale.

I will be publishing some stories, situational anecdotes about what I have learned through certain adversity and through the lens of curiosity and wonderment.
